A little bit about Leela

My name is Leela Schooler, and I am a student at Texas State University, majoring in mass communication. I grew up in Big Spring, Texas, where the skyline is made up of wind turbines instead of skyscrapers. Growing up, I was unaware of what mass communication was. It was only after I was hired for my first job at KBYG Radio that I discovered the field, but I quickly fell in love with it. After obtaining my associates in general studies at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, I transferred to Texas State to pursue a degree in mass communication.

In my time at Texas State University, I have tried to learn as much as possible. I have taken classes in many different fields of mass communication, including public relations, electronic media and journalism. I have also been involved in Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), and have volunteered two years in a row with mass communication week. These classes and experiences have not only deepened my understanding of mass communication, but have helped me make connections with both fellow students and professionals in the field. My time volunteering with mass communication week specifically has helped me discover just how versatile mass communication is, helping speakers from Google as well as speakers from the the Texas State Capitol. This discovery has only made me more excited to be going into mass communication, because I know that no matter where life takes me, I will never be bored!

Something that I believe has made my perspective in mass communication unique is my time studying communication studies abroad in Oxford, England. While mass communication studies communicating to masses, communication studies looks at communication at a more personal level. This perspective on communication looks at small group and indiviidual communication, which opened up my eyes on how people communicate, and has helped me in mass communication tremendously.
